Transmission and Incubation Period

Syphilis is primarily transmitted through unprotected sexual contact (vaginal, anal, or oral sex) with an infected person. The disease can be divided into 3 stages: early, secondary, latent, and late-stage. The incubation period can range from 9 to 90 days, and both men and women experience similar symptoms.

Symptoms

Early Stage

  • Painless sores may appear on the genitals or nearby areas, and can also appear on the lips or inside the mouth.
  • In women, sores may be hidden inside the vagina and show no symptoms.
  • Even if left untreated, sores may disappear on their own, but the bacteria remain in the body, meaning the infection is not cured.

Secondary Stage

  • Red rashes may appear on the hands, feet, abdomen, or genitals without pain or itching.
  • Patients may feel fatigued, experience fever, and have swollen lymph nodes.
  • Hair loss, mucosal damage, or wart-like growths may occur.
  • These symptoms may gradually disappear as the disease enters the latent stage.

Latent Stage

  • There may be no visible symptoms.
  • Only a blood test can confirm whether someone has contracted syphilis.

Late Stage

  • May occur months or years later, leading to more severe effects.
  • It can affect the brain, spinal cord, and heart, potentially causing blindness, paralysis, or even death.
  • If transmitted from a pregnant woman to her fetus, it can result in stillbirth, congenital syphilis, or long-term complications for the baby, such as blindness or deafness.

Testing and Treatment

You can get tested at the Social Hygiene Clinics under the Department of Health. Hong Kong residents with a valid ID are eligible for free testing and treatment. The process is confidential, and no appointment or doctor’s referral is needed. If finances allow, you can also visit private clinics for testing and treatment.

Most patients can be treated with doctor-prescribed antibiotics, and syphilis is curable if treated correctly. Patients must cooperate with healthcare professionals, follow their instructions, and attend regular follow-up appointments. Avoid self-medicating or delaying treatment, as this can worsen the condition. After treatment, follow-up tests are needed to ensure the infection has cleared. If symptoms persist, further consultations and treatments may be required.

During treatment, it is essential to refrain from any sexual activity to prevent further infections and avoid transmitting the disease to others. Sexual partners should also be tested and treated to prevent reinfection. Maintaining a monogamous relationship and consistently using condoms are effective ways to prevent sexually transmitted infections.
